Surviving winter semester

This was my last three-class semester for my WCC degree. Working full-time, the classwork balance is a little funny, where two classes are just a little too little work and three classes is just a little too much. I had to put lots of side projects (like this website) and even some day to day personal stuff on the back burner.

Doesn’t mean I did nothing else – I attended MiTechCon and went to a couple of local meetups. I’ve found these events helpful as a student because it helps recontextualize classwork. When we’re stuck in the mire of learning about bean annotation, it’s helpful to remember we’ll be doing it for a business, and there will be business needs and people management and financial goals and all sorts of stuff that isn’t just sitting in a dark room and staring at a computer screen.

Summer semester though, I’m only lined up for one class, which is just an economics class. I have to decide how I’m going to fill in the remaining time and continue with development skills. Crash course in Javascript? Develop a personal project? I don’t know yet.

Mostly I’ve been grateful that I’ve been able to do a little bit of personal care, too. I’ve gotten the summer yard care rolling, and I was able to do some recreational reading for the first time in ages: I read Cave of Bones, which is about the discovery of Homo naledi.
